So this was supposed to be my great picture about how the buildings are slanted...but I don't really think it's my best lol. Seriously though, look at the brown house. You'll notice that it leans forward a little. Well, that was actually done on purpose. When Amsteram was intially built, the entire city was a giant port. The houses actually used to be storage warehouses. However, they were so tall and skinny and the stairs were so steep they couldn't get their goods up the steps. To overcome this they actually lifted the goods outside and put them in through the windows. If you look at the top of each house, you'll see a wooden beam with a hook. That is what they used to hoist the merchandise up. Although, to keep it from scraping up the house as it went, they decided to build the houses leaning forward (more so at the top than at the bottom). I think it's easist to see on the brown house, but that's just a personal opinion. A few hundred years later, someone became smart and said they should just build the poles longer. Who knew?
Feels Good "coffee shop"...Right...
If you look to the left, you can see the hooks along the top of the houses.
